Whether it is about behaviours associated with social relationship, social communication or an impairment of thoughts our ultimate goal for our clients is to engage in meaningful recovery, employment, education or volunteering. We know for some, this may be difficult to achieve so we offer tailored care to build resilience and hope for independent community living.

We offer a range of care interventions in collaboration with Community based mental health and learning disability services in the NHS, Local Authorities and the Voluntary Sector to maximise client-centred outcomes.

Sam is the founder, Registered Manager and Managing Director of Chiron Care (UK) Limited.

A Registered Mental Health Nurse by background, Sam has over 35 years’ experience in healthcare services. He has held several senior management positions in the NHS and Independent Health sectors including Service Director for the Behavioural and Developmental Clinical Academic Group at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Since leaving the NHS in 2014, Sam has worked in several independent health organisation holding positions of General Manager at Barchester Healthcare and Hospital Director at Cygnet Hospital, Woking.

Throughout his managerial career Sam has been passionate about putting service users first and at the heart of everything Chiron Care does. Sam believed the journey to a caring service would require effective leadership, a committed workforce and oversight from experienced professionals in the field of health and social care. In 2021, Sam enlisted the support of his good friends and former work colleagues Jerome, Patrick and Barrie to help steer the organisation in the right direction.

Although Chiron Care was set up for people with general mental health diagnosis, it has more residents with diagnoses of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), Autism, ADHD and PTSD. As Sam is a hands-on team player with a strong commitment to the development of multi-disciplinary care team through training, coaching, supervision and strong leadership, he has reached out to other professionals to support staff in the care of service users with complex care needs.

Involvement with Chiron Care.

How did I get involved with Chiron Care? One word. Sam. I was approached by Sam in 2021. He told me he was setting up an exciting and innovative supportive living project called Chiron Care, would I help him? I had no hesitation in saying ‘Yes.’ Sam had been my line manager for several years when we both worked in the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. I shared his vision for Chiron Care and I wanted to bring something unique to the company as well. I hope to help develop service user involvement, and research and educational initiatives.

About Professor Jerome Carson.

Jerome has been Professor of Psychology at the University of Bolton since 2012. Prior to that he spent 27 years as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS. He worked at the Institute of Psychiatry/Maudsley for 19 years. He has been developing the recovery model since 2006 and has published three books with people with lived experience. Apart from recovery from mental health problems, his other interests are positive psychology, autoethnography, alcohol addiction and positive aging. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal Mental Health and Social Inclusion. He has published over 300 scientific papers and 15 books. He is very active in research. On Scopus ‘Researcher Discovery’ in March 2025 he was number two in the world rankings for autoethnography, eight for flourishing, ninth for post traumatic growth, 12 for mental illness recovery and 18 for addiction recovery.

Patrick Gillespie is the Service Director of Health and Justice Services at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL), with responsibility for healthcare in Prison and Forensic Services. A Registered General and Mental Health Nurse.  Patrick is a 2023 recipient of the Queen’s Nurse Award. Patrick has a proven track record of delivering safe, quality services and providing strategic leadership within the NHS and Independent Healthcare sectors. With over 40 years of experience, Patrick is dedicated to delivering high-quality care. He and Sam Antwi-Marful have been colleagues since 2000, having worked together on several strategic developments and operational management previously at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Patrick readily agreed to provide governance advisory and oversight when asked, as Sam and he hold the same values.

Barrie is a Registered Mental Health Nurse and holds a PhD in Forensic Nursing from the University of Bolton (now University of Greater Manchester). He retired after 35 years working both in the NHS and Independent sector as a Nurse Consultant and as a Director of Nursing in 2017 to focus on academic research and lecturing. Barrie has authored numerous articles and book chapters, chaired and presented conference papers both in the UK and overseas. He has also held a number of honorary academic positions in Hull, Hong Kong, and Bolton (where he is a Visiting Research Fellow).

He is acknowledged as an expert in Forensic Psychiatric Nursing and acclaimed by the Nursing Times as one of the most influential “Impact 75” nurses in the 75-year history of the NHS (Nursing Times. 2023. 19;7). Barrie also specialised in the criminological study, assessment, care, treatment and rehabilitation of mentally disordered offenders. He was instrumental in the development and operation of a number of NHS medium secure hospitals, most especially the Hull and Tyneside-based units.

As a founding and executive member of the Association of Nurse Consultants, Barrie contributed significantly to both the growth and development of this role. In 2006 Barrie worked alongside the Chief Nursing Office, Minister for Mental Health, the National Director for Mental Health Nursing and the UK Mental Health Tsar to publish the Review of Mental Health Nursing (2006). In addition, he was one of the first Independent Non-medical Prescribers in mental health in the UK.

Over the last decade Barrie has worked in the development of a “new” speciality Intensive Supported Living as a Clinical Advisor to Northern Healthcare, and more recently to Chiron Care. In the latter he has been inspired by the leadership and vision of Sam, the dedication of the other Directors and Advisors and the very innovative and client centred model of care.

In his spare time when he is not writing, supporting local constituency events, working on his cars and motorbikes, he likes to travel the world with his wife, Lucy.

Adeela has 30 years of experience in the mental health field across Ireland and the UK, providing treatment through psychological therapies. As a proactive and highly committed member of multidisciplinary teams, she has played a key role in delivering and developing effective mental health services across various care settings, including national charities, the private sector, medico-legal and expert witness work, as well as primary care mental health services.

She is a specialist psychologist and psychotherapist working in the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust in two different services (Talking Therapies Stockport and the Psychology service in Tameside and Glossop) focusing on services for adults with personality disorders, autism/ADHD, PTSD, couples, psychosexual therapy, and psychological therapy for comorbid mental health conditions. She is deeply interested in the efficacy and integration of psychological therapies for these groups and makes necessary adaptations in therapy.

Her clinical experience involves years of practising and implementing therapeutic techniques such as CBT, EMDR, DBT, and CFT is crucial in addressing the multifaceted nature of mental health issues. Adeela has wide experience in applying these methods within a primary care setting to individuals over 16 years old, particularly those with complex conditions like autism, ADHD, psycho-sexual dysfunction, EUPD, depression, and various anxiety disorders. In addition to this she set up a DBT group for clients presented with EUPD, and neurodivergence and covered mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

Adeela works with service users to explore their feelings, thoughts, and beliefs to  facilitate personal growth and self-discovery, enabling clients to make informed choices and decisions that resonate with their values and life philosophies.

Beyond clinical work, Adeela has a strong interest in autoethnography and has contributed a chapter to the book Autoethnographies in Psychology and Mental Health: New Voices, reflecting her commitment to innovative research and practice in mental health.

Involvement with Chiron Care.

I met Sam last year at a conference held at Bolton University, where we were introduced by Prof. Jerome Carson. I was truly impressed by the way Sam established his service and his passion for improving the mental health of residents in supported living. His dedication inspired me, and when he invited me to contribute to enhancing mental health support at Chiron Care, I eagerly accepted. Sharing his vision, I aim to bring a unique perspective to the service, particularly my experience in working with complex mental health conditions such as autism, ADHD, and EUPD. My contributions will focus on strengthening service user involvement, delivering clinical mental health interventions, supervising clinical staff, and initiating research projects to further improve the quality of care in supported living.

About me

I have years of experience as a psychologist and fitness professional. I work in a wide range of areas, including relationship issues, anxiety, depression, health issues, work-life balance, sports performance, and barriers to maintaining a balanced life. I specialise in sport and exercise psychology primarily concerned with the application of psychology to increase exercise participation and motivational levels in athletes and the general public. I work with athletes and the general public optimising the benefits to derive from exercise participation and helping individual clients with the implementation of goal-setting strategies. I also work with individuals, groups, and organisations to improve their physical fitness while improving their cognitive abilities.

My work also includes counselling referees to deal with the stressful and demanding aspects of their role, advising coaches on how to build cohesion within their squad of athletes, and helping athletes with personal development and the psychological consequences of sustaining an injury. While working with sports specifics, I also work with people in day-to-day life helping them identify underlying causes or hindrances that are holding them back from enjoying their lives and empowering them for a better lifestyle and peak performance.

 

My involvement in Chiron Care

In 2024, I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Sam Antwi-Marful during a conference held at the University of Bolton. Even though a lot of things caught my eye, two in particular stood out to me: Sam’s passion and dedication to uniquely developing Chiron Care, and his goals of integrating mental health professionals in a residential care environment. In my experience working with residential and domiciliary care providers in the past, the unique engagement of mental health specialists was particularly noteworthy. Being a part of Chiron Care, where residents are receiving care in a totally different manner, makes me feel privileged. I aim to bring my experience in mental and physical well-being to make a difference at Chiron Care.

Kevin is proud to be an advisor to Chiron Care, where he brings a range of experience in Supported Living services and governance. His role at Chiron is built on a career that has included clinical work, research at a national and international level, international development projects, policy development and expert witness roles.

 

He is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatric Nursing at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (Kings College, University of London). He is, by professional background a Chartered Psychologist, a Chartered Scientist and a Registered Nurse. He is currently a Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, Australia. Over the course of his research/academic  career, he remained in clinical practice as a Practitioner Psychologist. He retired from clinical work in December 2018; however, he returned to clinical practice in 2020 as a response to the Covid19 pandemic; eventually retiring from clinical practice in 2024)

 

He was elected to Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2002 for his outstanding contribution to Psychiatry, to Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2000 for his distinguished contribution to Medical Sciences and in 1998, to Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing for his exceptional contribution to nursing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine where he serves as a member and Honorary Secretary of the Psychiatry Council.

 

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association elected him “Psychiatric Nurse of the Year” in 2004. He has a number of Visting Professorships, Honorary Doctorates and other awards..

 

He was appointed CBE in the New Year’s Honours in 1998/9.

 

He has been the founding Patron, Trustee, or advisor to a number of charities. He has made numerous radio and TV appearances in which his clinical work has featured.

 

He is the author or editor of 17 books. approximately 300 journal articles, conference papers (National and International) and book chapters.  He is the co-editor of a standard textbook of mental health nursing. He is a veteran of many marathons and still enjoys running with mates in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside.

In my experience working with residential and domiciliary care providers in the past, the unique engagement of mental health specialists was particularly noteworthy. Being a part of Chiron Care, where residents are receiving care in a totally different manner, makes me feel privileged. I aim to bring my experience in mental and physical well-being to make a difference at Chiron Care.
